There are times when the flooring in your home just doesn’t cut it anymore, but despite your desire to change it; you just aren’t able to for one reason or another. This happens more than you think, especially when you rent. Whether you rent and can’t change the ugly flooring in your apartment, or you own your home but can’t afford the expense of replacing old flooring, you don’t just have to live with it. You can hide unattractive flooring in your home using any of the four suggestions below.
1. Get Creative With Area Rugs
Area rugs come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and patterns. They make a great, cheap floor covering that’s easy to move and change as you see fit. One trendy way to use area rugs is to layer them atop one another to create a visual display that distracts the eye from the flooring underneath. You don’t need to cover the entire floor with an area rug to make it look better, however. Just choose a rug that covers the majority of the center of the floor and use potted plants or other accessories to hide what the rug doesn’t cover. Get creative and use several different sizes, colors, and patterns that complement your existing décor.
2. Make A DIY Floor Cloth
One of the best things about a floor cloth is that it can be used to cover up almost any type of ugly flooring. Floor cloths lay equally well on top of hard floors such as wood, laminate, and vinyl; and they look nice atop carpeting as well. You can make a floor cloth to hide unattractive flooring using some craft store canvas, some home interior paint, and some painter’s tape.
3. Buy Snap-Together Carpet Squares
This might be a little more costly than the last two suggestions, but in the end, you wind up with a great looking floor that you can take up, change, or take with you if you move. Snap-together carpet squares that come in a variety of sizes, and they can be trimmed to fit anywhere. They snap together like puzzle pieces and remain in place until you move them. Choose a solid color or pick a couple to create an interesting display on the floor.
4. Make Use Of Carpet Samples And Scraps
If you have scraps of carpet left over, or you have access to some carpet square samples, you can make your own area rug. Be sure to measure the area you wish to cover, and then begin laying out all the pieces in an appealing design. Once you have them all in place, take a picture with your phone so you won’t lose track of what you want should the squares get mixed up. Use carpet seaming tape underneath the squares to hold the pieces together. If you have gaps between some of the squares, simply cut pieces to fit and use the tape to secure them in place.
Just because you don’t have the means to replace an ugly floor in your home doesn’t mean you have to live with it. Consider one of the suggestions above to hide unattractive flooring in your home.
